Whiteness: The Seesaw of Inclusion and Exclusion - How European Immigrant Ancestors Adapted to a Racist Society
Event Description:How did European ethnic groups become White? Why does racism privilege some white racial subgroups over others? In this workshop participants will learn about and reflect on the un-mourned losses, and illusory gains in being White. Participants will experience and explore their emotional reactions to conversations about racism, in an environment that promotes understanding and acceptance.
Bio’s
Julie Sullivan-Redmond, LCSW-R, CGP is in private practice. She specializes in working with adults who are in personal or professional transition. Julie is a member of the EGPS Racial Equity Work Group. She is certified in EMDR therapy and the Realization Process. Over the past 25 years she has conducted groups and workshops for many different populations. She has an MA in Communications from Fairfield University and an MSW from New York University.
Christine Schmidt, LCSW, is a psychotherapist in private practice, a mediator with the New York Peace Institute, and an organizer with the AntiRacist Alliance. She has led workshops about confronting racism for psychotherapy organizations and professional groups. Ms. Schmidt is on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society and co-chairs the Work Group for Racial Equity. She is also on faculty of the Advanced Psychodynamic Addictions Training program at Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center.
