Exploring our Social location to power within our own identity.

Event Description:

WG4RE Monthly Discussion Group

Topic: Exploring our Social location to power within our own identity.

When: Apr 16, 2024, 08:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Social location refers to an individual's position within social structures, which encompasses various intersecting factors such as race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, religion, and more. Power, pertains to the ability to influence or control the behavior of others, resources, or events. When discussing social location to power, we're examining how one's position within society affects their access to and exercise of power.

Social location to power determines the degree of privilege or marginalization an individual experiences. Those with intersecting privileges (e.g., being white, male, heterosexual, and affluent) tend to have greater access to power and resources in society. Conversely, individuals who occupy marginalized social locations (e.g., people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, disabled individuals) often face systemic barriers that limit their access to power.

What happens to us when our intersecting identities simultaneously inhabits areas of privilege and marginalization or subjugation?  Do we comprehend how society organizes structurally to codify and maintain the privileged and marginalized identities.  How much is our understanding of this caste system impacted by the lens we choose to view it from.  Surveying some of the thoughts of Isabel Wilkerson, Kenneth Hardy and Peter Beinart, we will begin our exploration.
