The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness

Event Description:

The Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society Work Group for Racial Equity invites you to join us in collective learning discussions of literature about white racism. We will be devoting the next four discussions to Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness  to deepen our understanding of why and how racism exists in our country today. While we invite you to participate in all of the discussions, please feel free to read the chapters prior to discussion and join in at any date. We aim to be as inclusive as possible. A study guide is attached to assist you to read and prepare for each discussion. If you can’t download the guide, contact us at our addresses listed at the end of this notice.

Our discussions are “virtual”, so participate by video link from your computer or by phone on the 3rd Monday of the month. If you join by video and don’t have a strong wifi connection, consider downloading the Zoom.us app for your mobile device; if you join by phone, be sure to use the assigned meeting id.

May 16th, 8:30-9:45pm, https://zoom.us/j/713770601 or 646 558 8656 Meeting ID: 713 770 601

We encourage emotional risk-taking in each discussion. Bravery is the only means by which we can challenge the yokes of our racialized conditioning and deepen our capacity to connect with each other’s humanity. Be prepared to share how each reading emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually impacted you. During the discussion, be brave about sharing and listening deeply.

 No sign up is required.
