Moving from racial enactment to racial understanding: Reflections on the Holmes Commission Report

Event Description:

Moving from racial enactment to racial understanding:

Reflections on the Holmes Commission Report

November 21, 2023, Work Group for Racial Equity Discussion Group, 8:30-9:45pm

Facilitators: Nardia Brooks, LCSW and Christine Schmidt, LCSW, CGP

Moving from racial enactment to racial understanding is a group process because it develops in relationships. It’s something we do together.

On Juneteenth, 2023, the American Psychoanalytic Association released “The Final Report of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in Psychoanalysis 2023.” It is a groundbreaking report in its scope and focus on systemic racism in mental health organizations. Racial enactments were identified in the report as one of the principal areas of concern. If you don’t read the entire report, please read the Executive Summary, pages 5-20 with particular attention to section 4 on racial enactments, pages 15-16Consider reading an interview with members of the Commission https://psychnews.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.pn.2023.10.10.13

  Let’s talk about it!

How do we understand racial enactments and what should we do about them? What do you think about these statements?

Racial enactments are behavior dynamics influenced by racism that are unconsciously played out in group and interpersonal processes.

Racial enactments are inevitable because white supremacist culture has impacted all our social structures, families, and organizations.

Racial enactments are ubiquitous and occur when people are working or learning together in mixed-race groups.

Racial enactments occur in interpersonal relationships, but most often are situated in group dynamics in schools, organizations, and institutions.

The discussion group free, but you need to register to attend:
