ENCANTO

Event Description:

Join us on Tuesday, May 17th for a discussion of Disney’s critically acclaimed 2021 film Encanto.

From the Studio: Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the Mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal- every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

While an unusual choice for a discussion group, the film offers opportunities to discuss the complexities of identity and family relationships. What roles do we play in our families and what makes us gifted or ordinary? How does immigration and intergenerational trauma shape our experiences in our families and shape our self-view?

Encanto is available for streaming on Disney+ (need subscription or free trial), Amazon Prime (available for rent) and in select theaters.
