The Second Amendment and Anti-Blackness
Event Description:EGPS Work Group for Racial Equity Discussion Group
Professor Carol Anderson
Monday, Tuesday January 18, 2022 from 8:30-9:45pm. (Eastern Time US & Canada)
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution – the “right” to bear arms – is cited by political persuasions on the right and left. It is central the American obsession with guns and gun violence. Professor Carol Anderson exposes the deep racial hypocrisy at the roots of the second amendment: it has been consistently used to control and terrorize Black people. In her analysis, the second amendment is about anti-Blackness, not guns.
How do we understand the relationship between guns and self-protection?
How do we react to Black empowerment and White vigilantism?
What is our responsibility as citizens in a society rife with gun violence?
Are gun rights civil rights? Human rights?
Consider these questions as you read The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America or listen to interviews with Dr. Anderson.
