How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America

by poet/scholar/journalist/educator Clint Smith

This book is a travelogue through time, history and culture that takes us on a journey through nine different geographical locations in the United States with a final stop in Africa. Throughout his travels, Smith shares his observations, reactions, knowledge and research. He effectively provides a constructive reckoning of the distorted and mostly forgotten history of slavery. Smith is bold, yet movingly sensitive, as he confronts so many misconceptions, omissions and myths. This is a powerful discourse providing an invaluable opportunity for Americans to explore and confront the denial, cognitive dissonance, rationalization, and delusional thinking at work among those who fail to acknowledge the evil of racism in our society.

We meet monthly on the third Tuesday evening of the month to discuss relevant books, films, podcasts and articles.
