We rarely hear about therapeutic work in group and individual therapy simultaneously.

Working with someone in this way can be helpful, if not synergistic to the overall progress of treatment. “Combined treatment” is when the same therapist sees a patient in both modalities; “conjoint” is when there are two therapists. With two therapists and one patient in common, there can also be splitting, transference and countertransference issues (between all parties).  Given the patient’s permission, it is advantageous to have periodic communication between the therapists that is in the service of the patient’s evolving growth.

We will present a fascinating man with a complex, painful history, who finally achieved a sense and place of belonging in his life. Tragically, he died in December 2020 after contracting coronavirus – a huge loss for each of us and the group.  The critical importance of his individual work, in itself, and in helping sustain his longevity and intense connection to the group, will be described.  This will be followed by ample time for discussion and Q & A.

PRESENTERS BIOS’S

Robin Good is Director of the EGPS Training Program in Group Psychotherapy (since 2015) and on the Faculty, since it began. Training has been one of her passions. She is a psychologist in private practice in NYC and Hastings on Hudson, offering individual, couples, group therapy and supervision.  Her preferred mode of clinical work is combined and conjoint treatment. Dr. Good has presented on this topic among others at EGPS, WGPS and nationally through AGPA, APA, AK Rice Institute and other psychoanalytic institutes. She is a graduate of NYU’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and a Clinical Adjunct at CUNY’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program.

Marie Rothschild served as Director of the EGPS Training Program in Group Psychotherapy for 8 years until 2015 and is currently a Dean of Advanced Studies. Interestingly, she is a proud early graduate of the Training Program. She maintains a  private practice in Manhattan and Rockville Centre, Long Island, working with individuals, couples and groups. At Mt Sinai Hospital, Dept of Psychiatry, she supervises psychiatric residents. In addition to her MSW, she also holds Adelphi University’s post graduate Clinical Certificate.
