This workshop is based in clinical work with trans people in psychotherapy. Gender is an aspect of consciousness. The feeling of gender incongruence is not only based on visual incongruence but interoceptive sensations and one’s predictions regarding those sensations. The free energy principle will be used to explain why and how transgender people feel and experience their gender differently than cisgendered people through predictive coding. We will explore how this is illustrated in case examples and how one works within psychotherapy towards patients’ sense of homeostasis and freedom. Case examples of group work with Trans, Non-binary and Gender Diverse people will be explored. The workshop will also help in reflection of cisprivilege and unconscious bias.
Bio: S.J. Langer is a writer and psychotherapist in New York City, where he maintains a private practice. He is on faculty at School of Visual Arts in both the MPS Art Therapy and Humanities & Sciences departments and is the Principal Investigator studying embodiment and trans phantoms. His article Trans Bodies and the Failure of Mirrors was the co-winner of the Symonds Prize from Studies in Gender and Sexuality. He is included in the edited volume Sex, Sexuality and Trans Identities: Clinical Guidance for Psychotherapists and Counselors. His first book Theorizing Transgender Identity for Clinical Practice: A New Model for Understanding Gender was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in 2020.
