As therapists we often see individuals and couples who have not had sex for a long time, sometimes decades and who are asking for help with this.  How can we as therapists help?  How do we conceptualize and prioritize the multiple dynamics underlying a lack of sexual engagement or the absence of erotic energy?  What can we offer to the person or couple as a means to address this?  Where do we start?

The discussion group will address the above questions as well as the conundrum of desire and attachment, do they enhance each other or complicate matters?  What is a love/lust split?  What actually is desire, this thing everyone wants more of?  Is desire even necessary for a thriving sex life?

Dr. Miller will give practical tools for how therapists can integrate sex therapy into their work to enrich their effectiveness in working with those challenging couples who report a lack of sexual interest.  Case material will be presented.  Come with your questions.

Bio: Dr. Wendy E. Miller is a clinical psychologist in private practice with over 35 years of experience treating individuals and couples.  She received her PhD from George Washington University and is a graduate of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.  She is an AASECT certified sex therapist (CST) and has trained extensively in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy as well as with the Tavistock Center for Couple Relationships.  Currently, Dr. Miller is on the faculty of The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute where she teaches classes on human sexuality and she consults at The Center for Optimal Living on issues involving the link between sexuality and drug use.  Most recently, she became a therapy and research collaborator with Dr. Peggy Kleinplatz’s Optimal Sexual Experiences Research Team of the University of Ottawa and is conducting couple therapy groups based on this model.  Her interests are in the intersection of psychoanalytic thinking and sex therapy and her passion is helping people navigate the complicated task of being a couple and the even more complicated task of being a sexually vibrant couple.
