Enactment and Narrative in Group Psychotherapy: The Unobtrusive Relational Group Analyst – Robert Grossmark, PhD
Event Description:For so long psychotherapy has focused on what can be talked about and understood between people. Actions and behaviors have generally been classed as “acting out” and the focus has generally been to put feelings into words. But what about parts of the psyche that have never had a form, representation or words? These are areas that contain the sequelae of trauma and neglect. Robert Grossmark will present an approach to group and individual work that privileges what is enacted wordlessly between group members and between therapist and patient. Working within this register he companions patients and groups in their worlds of unexpressed pain and trauma and finds a new enacted form of narrative and healing.
Bio: Robert Grossmark, PhD is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. He works with individuals groups and couples and conducts psychoanalytic reading and supervision groups. He teaches and supervises at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis, The National Institute for the Psychotherapies Program in Adult Psychoanalysis, National Training Program in Psychoanalysis, The Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society and other psychoanalytic institutes and clinical psychology doctoral programs.
He has authored numerous papers on psychoanalytic process and group treatment and the recently published book The Unobtrusive Relational Analyst: Explorations in Psychoanalytic Companioning. He co-edited the books, The One & The Many: Relational Approaches to Group Psychotherapy and Heterosexual Masculinities: Contemporary Perspectives from Psychoanalytic Gender Theory, all published by Routledge.
