Back to Natural - Film and Discussion with Filmaker Gillian Scott-Ward
Event Description:“I have to go natural. I have to do a documentary.” And with these thoughts, Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward, psychologist-filmmaker, did both. Please join EGPS Work Group for Racial and Dr. Scott-Ward for a film viewing and discussion. Back to Natural is Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward’s tribute to Black individuals about the personal and political costs of living authentically with one’s own chemically untreated hair. Filmed on three continents, Back to Natural takes up both the intimacy of negotiating one’s racial identity and the racially discriminatory treatment of black people who have been harassed, threatened, punished, demoted or fired because of the texture or style of their hair. This film contributed to passage of a 2019 law in NYC aimed to remedy this discriminatory treatment.
