Identity 'Politics': Group Psychotherapy & the Political Self - Kevin Gillette, PsyD

Event Description:

In general discourse -- with our culture shaped as it is by white supremacist values -- the racial and ethnic identities of marginalized groups are often denied their significance and dismissed as "identity politics", i.e., treated as though extraneous to the discussion of "real" issues.

In our work with groups we encounter myriad choice points; our decisions at these junctures are based on multiple factors. Some of these -- our values, for instance -- may stand outside the scope of what the orthodox observer might consider "strictly clinical".

This workshop will explore: how our values can be shaped by our own racial/ethnic identities; the significance both of these hold for the decisions we make as group therapists; the role that group members' racial/ethnic identities play in our work; and how/when/why the political = the personal.
