FIRE in the CIRCLE:
Leading through Fear, Desire, Turbulence, and Division

Groups have long been understood as circles—spaces of gathering, reflection, desire, and shared meaning-making. Yet circles are rarely calm or stable for long. At times, they hold heat: conflict, urgency, fear, and the intensity of difference. In the current moment, many groups find themselves organized around these very forces, as polarization, mistrust, and social fracture permeate clinical, organizational, and public life.
What does it mean to lead when the circle is on fire?
This conference explores the challenges of leadership in groups charged with anxiety, division, and moral tension. Leaders today are called not only to facilitate dialogue, but to withstand and work within powerful affective currents. These dynamics often contribute to harm and defensive processes such as splitting, scapegoating, withdrawal, and the hardening of positions that foreclose curiosity and mutual recognition.
At the same time, difference—of identity, experience, power, and perspective—remains both a source of vitality and a site of profound strain within groups. How do leaders engage difference without either collapsing it into false consensus or amplifying it into irreparable rupture? How can conflict be worked with rather than extinguished or inflamed? What capacities are required to remain present, thoughtful, and ethically grounded when the group itself feels volatile or combustible?

Plenary Panel
“What does it mean to lead when the circle is on fire?” Group Leadership Across Division: A Panel from Three Perspectives
Thursday Evening, November 12, 2026 Plenary, Live Online
Howard Friedman, PhD
JJ Mull, LCSW, LICSW
Jacob Winkler, LCSW, CGP
Sometimes group leaders surface conflict so we can wrestle with it, but sometimes conflict descends on us unannounced. The plenary brings together leaders with diverse approaches, perspectives, identities, and experiences to challenge our thinking about conflict and differences, inclusion and exclusion. How do we approach this dynamic produced in our relationships with others? How do leaders foster connection and inclusion while also creating space for difference, conflict, desire, and dissent? Come. Consider. Experience. Learn.
Affinity Groups
The EGPS Annual Conference offers attendees opportunities to learn about their work and themselves as individuals and group leaders. As we navigate and explore alongside others, many emotions and reactions arise. We can be harmed and harm others, especially when considering the inevitable enactments of microaggressions, racism, oppression, and white supremacy. We offer Affinity Groups as a space to welcome, hold, contain, and collectively process these experiences within a shared identity.
Social Gatherings
On both conference days: Whether you’re wrapping up the online conference day or finishing in-person workshops, join us to unwind, reconnect with familiar faces, and meet new people across our community. Drop into our relaxed online Zoom gathering to chat agenda-free over your favorite drink, or mingle in person over light bites and beverages as we celebrate the day’s highlights. There are no formal presentations or pressure—just friendly spaces to swap takeaways, share a few laughs, and build lasting connections before the event concludes!
