SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Talking About Sex in Group Therapy: Exploring Desire\, Aggression\, Shame\, and Connection - Juliane Maxwald
DESCRIPTION:Location: Virtually on Zoom \nDescription: Sexuality is often present in group therapy long before anyone actually talks about sex. It can emerge through desire\, flirtation\, humor\, silence\, competition\, shame\, attraction\, avoidance\, or simply a shift in the emotional temperature of the room. This seminar explores sexuality as part of the unconscious relational life of the group and considers the ways desire\, aggression\, shame\, and stimulation become intertwined. Drawing on psychoanalytic sex therapy\, relational theory\, trauma-informed thinking\, and group process\, we will pay particular attention to how groups defend against or regulate sexual and aggressive material\, how leaders may participate in these processes\, and how countertransference and embodied responses can become useful sources of clinical information. Through didactic material\, clinical examples\, an experiential group process\, and discussion\, participants will consider how to create enough safety and containment for difficult material to become thinkable and speakable without shutting down the intensity and aliveness that can make group work transformative.\n \nPresenter Bio: \nJuliane Maxwald is a licensed psychoanalyst\, AASECT-certified sex therapist\, author\, and educator with more than 20 years of clinical experience. She teaches and supervises across a variety of psychoanalytic and sex therapy institutes and training programs. Her clinical and teaching work integrates relational psychoanalysis\, sex therapy\, and trauma-informed approaches\, with a particular interest in the unconscious meanings of sexuality\, desire\, shame\, and relational experience. She is the author of Psychoanalytic Sex Therapy: Exploring the Unconscious Life of Sexuality (Routledge\, 2026) and maintains a private practice in New York City working with individuals and couples. \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, contact the Seminar Series Co-Chairs\, Nardia Brooks and Jacqueline Ambrosini.

SUMMARY:Annual Conference Plenary (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the EGPS Annual Conference\, November 12-14\, online and in NYC! \nGroups have long been understood as circles—spaces of gathering\, reflection\, desire\, and shared meaning-making. Yet circles are rarely calm or stable for long. At times\, they hold heat: conflict\, urgency\, fear\, and the intensity of difference. In the current moment\, many groups find themselves organized around these very forces\, as polarization\, mistrust\, and social fracture permeate clinical\, organizational\, and public life. \nWhat does it mean to lead when the circle is on fire? \n  \n\n  \nThis conference explores the challenges of leadership in groups charged with anxiety\, division\, and moral tension. Leaders today are called not only to facilitate dialogue\, but to withstand and work within powerful affective currents. These dynamics often contribute to harm and defensive processes such as splitting\, scapegoating\, withdrawal\, and the hardening of positions that foreclose curiosity and mutual recognition. \nAt the same time\, difference—of identity\, experience\, power\, and perspective—remains both a source of vitality and a site of profound strain within groups. How do leaders engage difference without either collapsing it into false consensus or amplifying it into irreparable rupture? How can conflict be worked with rather than extinguished or inflamed? What capacities are required to remain present\, thoughtful\, and ethically grounded when the group itself feels volatile or combustible? \n  \n\n
