The Promise of Being Big / the excitement in remaining small - David Rothauser, MA, MST
Event Description:As group leaders, we (alongside our members) come to group with conscious and unconscious longing. Just as our members yearn for growth, we, too, struggle with “being big” - knowing and accepting our own internal fantasy lives, taking up space, being fully ourselves. The process of expansion in group often involves relinquishing something, such as a story, a commitment, a role, or a deeply held identity. At the crossroads of what’s new and what’s familiar, powerful feelings of deprivation, competition and shame can arise. Alongside the discomfort, there is hidden excitement and vigorous attachment to these self-states. Remaining “small” - in the safety of the known - can be more attractive than venturing into unknown relational and emotional terrain. In this workshop, we will work together to establish a culture that allows for mutual investigation of this paradox of group life.
Presenter Bio: David Rothauser, MA, MST is a leadership coach and consultant to individuals and organizations. He conducts an ongoing leadership training group for participants from a range of professional sectors and teaches workshops on team development and group leadership. David has extensive experience facilitating groups in schools and training school-based group leaders. He holds master’s degrees in education and psychoanalysis and is a graduate of the Center for Group Studies, where he specialized in a psychodynamic approach to group leadership. David is currently an advanced candidate at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies where he sees patients for individual treatment.
