Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior -- What do we Make of all This? What Works and Why? - Michael M. Crocker, DSW, LCSW

Event Description:

Is sex addicting?  This controversy was highlighted by rejection of the proposed diagnostic category of "Hypersexual Disorder" by the DSM-5 research committee.  Yet, recent daily news of celebrities and politicians has inflamed the controversy.

In New York, the Sexuality, Attachment and Trauma Project recently published research that provided evidence that there is a relationship between OCSB and insecure attachment styles. Specifically, the research indicated that people who assessed as struggling with OCSB also assessed as having high levels of attachment avoidant behaviors. The research implied that those who struggle with OCSB may actually want a connection but are fearful of exposing the vulnerability required in intimacy. It has been theorized that this fear often arises out of early attachment trauma. How can we understand OCSB using multiple diagnostic categories to include models of addiction, affect disorders, impulse control disorders and attachment related issues? What treatments work? Are 12-step models helpful or in some cases damaging?
