Compensation for Slavery - What Does this Mean to Me?

Event Description:

Compensation for Slavery - What Does this Mean to Me?

EGPS Work Group for Racial Equity discussion group

Jan 17, 2023 08:45 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Facilitated by Libby O’Connor and Christine Schmidt

There are some facts about the payment of Reparations for us to examine: With the exception of payments made to formerly enslaved people of African descent by their enslavers of the Five Tribes, formerly enslaved people were never compensated for the theft of their labor, abduction from their homeland, and destruction of their families. Following the Civil War, enslavers were paid reparations for the loss of their chattel labor, but formerly enslaved people were offered nothing. Colonial struggles that resulted in liberation of enslaved people of African descent in Haiti and in the British Caribbean colonies indebted the newly liberated to the former colonizers, guaranteeing a legacy of impoverishment and ongoing racist oppression.

Consider these questions as you become familiar with the facts and the narratives about Reparations for Slavery:

Why are Black victims of human rights violations denied Reparations?

What does this look like today in our institutions?

How does this show up in our lives?

What are our responsibilities for righting this historic wrong?
