We're Here: Selma, Alabama

Event Description:

We're Here: Selma Alabama

Please join us on October 18 from 8:30-9:45pm for a discussion of the “Selma, Alabama” episode of the celebratory, touching and exhilarating, Emmy-winning documentary series, “We’re Here.”

Bob the Drag Queen asserts that: “My freedom as a black, queer person is directly linked to Selma.” In an era of “don’t-say-gay” bills, book bannings, and transphobia, this documentary series catalogues the experience of three RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni connecting with and celebrating queer excellence and vibrance throughout America. In an especially poignant and impactful visit to Selma, Alabama, the drag queens explore the intersections of race, gender and sexuality; of history and present; of pain and growth. You’ll laugh, cry, and hopefully discover something new.

Consider as you watch, read, listen:

  • How does the episode make you feel?

  • How do the communities represented here contend with and overcome systems of oppression?

  • How does race interact with the performance of gender?

  • What can drag do to contend with and push back against social injustice?
